چکیده

In an earlier paper (7) the chlorophyll composition of a number of chlorina mutants of barley obtained from D. W. Robertson (10) were described and it was then pointed out that one of the mutants appeared to be entirely lacking in chlorophyll b. Thus, it was of considerable interest to learn whether the chlorophyll b deficiency was affecting the photosynthetic activity of this mutant. Comparative studies on the photosynthetic activities in white light of the normal type (containing chlorophyll a & b) and of the mutant as well as studies on their respiratory behavior in the dark and in the light are reported here. In addition, some effort has been made to ascertain whether chlorophyll b could possibly be detectedl in the chlorophyll b deficient mutant by means of the more sensitive fluorescence analysis of chromatographed pigment extracts. Chlorophyll b dleficient mutants in higher plants first were described by Eyster (4) in maize and more recelntly by Robbelen (9) in Arabi(lopsis. However, the plants described by these investigators (lid not survive the seedling stage-dying rather early in their life cycles. In contrast, the barley mutant employed in the investigations described here can complete its life cycle and thus should be of considerable usefulness in continuied investigations on the role of chlorophyll b in the photo-mletabolismii of higher plants.

Mutants of Sweetclover (Melilotus alba) Lacking Chlorophyll b: Studies on Pigment-Protein Complexes and Thylakoid Protein Phosphorylation.

Mutants of sweetclover (Melilotus alba) with defects in the nuclear ch5 locus were examined. Using thin-layer chromatography and absorption spectroscopy, three of these mutants were found to lack chlorophyll (Chl) b. One of these three mutants, U374, possessed thylakoid membranes lacking the three Chl b-containing pigment-protein complexes (AB-1, AB-2, and AB-3) while still containing A-1 and A...

Characterization of a Thermo-Inducible Chlorophyll-Deficient Mutant in Barley

Leaf color is an important trait for not only controlling crop yield but also monitoring plant status under temperature stress. In this study, a thermo-inducible chlorophyll-deficient mutant, named V-V-Y, was identified from a gamma-radiated population of the barley variety Vlamingh. The leaves of the mutant were green under normal growing temperature but turned yellowish under high temperature...

Genetic and Chlorophyll Studies of a Yellow-Green Mutant in Muskmelon.

Chlorophyll-deficient individuals have been reported in most species of plants studied intensively by genetic methods. The majority of these chlorotic types have been shown to be the expression of a single gene mutation. However, there is a large group of types that exhibit maternal inheritance, and transmission of the deficiency to their offspring is conditioned by the cytoplasm. Until rather ...

Comparison of physiological and biochemical responses of wheat and barley to Selenium by spraying application under rain fed conditions. Nour Ali Sajedi* and Hamid Madani

This study investigated the effect of two forms of Se at three rates (0, 18, and 36 g/ha) on wheat and barley under rain fed conditions. Results showed that spraying application of 18 g/ha Se increased Chl a and Chl a+b contents while the selenium rate 36 g/ha decreased plant pigments. Evaluations of Chl a, Chl b, chlorophyll total a+b, carotenoids, chlorophyll total content, relative water con...
